MIWW Winners Chosen
The 2009 Minnesota
Make It With Wool Contest was held on December 5th in Alexandria, Minnesota.
The contest had over thirty contestants that participated within six
divisions.
Our Junior
Division winner was Katie Petersen Wannanska
, Minnesota who constructed
a black wool jumper with red and black blouse from a recycled piece
of wool.
The Senior
Division winner was Alyssa Nelson of Jackson, Minnesota. Alyssa constructed
an ensemble which included a gray jumper, red knit tee shirt, black
mohair jacket and gray mohair knee length coat. Alyssa finished 5th
in the senior division along with winning the 1st place mohair award
at the National Make It With Wool Contest in Nashville, TN this past
January.
The Adult Division
winner was Traci Lafrentz of St. Joseph, Minnesota. She competed with
a black and white checked dress. The dress was one that she had
seen in a magazine.
New this year, Minnesota held a quilt and novelty contest.

- Janet Kinnel, Wilmar, with her wool quilt, and in the novelty division
the winning entry was Kay
Bergerson, Forest Lake, with her braided wool rug.

You could be the next winner
in the “Make It With Wool” Contest! A luxurious piece of
Predelton Wool, sewing and yarn products or one of the many other prizes
could be yours for participating in the 2010 contest.

Registration deadline is November 6, 2009.
The State contest will be held December 4 in Morton, MN at the Jackpot
Junction, 29275 Cty Hwy 24.
All those entering the competition must select, construct (sew, knit
or crochet) and model the garments they enter. The material must be
made of a minimum of 60% wool. Juniors (ages 13-16); seniors (ages 17-24)
and adults (25+) may enter dresses, coats, suits or other garments.
Pre-teens (ages 12 & under) may enter jumpers, skirts, pants, vests,
dresses, jackets or shirts. Age is as of December 31, 2010.
The purpose of the “Make It With Wool” Contest is to focus
attention on the beauty and versatility of wool, and encourage the use
of wool fabric or yarn in sewing, knitting or crocheting fashionable
garments by offering individuals the opportunity to compete for valuable
prizes and gain recognition for their talents.
Junior and Senior winners of the Contest are eligible to go on to the
National “Make it With Wool” competition which will be held
January 19-22, 2011 in Reno, NV.

WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES?

To promote the beauty and versatility
of wool fabrics and yarns.

in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning and weaving wool fabrics
and yarns.

WHO CAN ENTER?

All categories may not be available
in each state. (Check with state director for specific information.)
Anyone regardless of race, creed
or sex who meets age and other guidelines may participate.
Preteens, junior and senior contestants

entries: the intended wearer must model garments.

WHAT CAN I ENTER?
Juniors, Seniors, Adults,
Made for Others may enter:

One-piece garment: dress,
jumper, outerwear, jacket, coat or cape
-
Two-piece outfit: coat,
jacket, cape, blouse/shirt, vest or sweater with dress, jumper,
skirt, pants or shorts
-
Ensemble (3 or more garments
worn together at one time): coat, jacket, cape, blouse/shirt,
vest and/or sweater with dress, jumper, skirt, pants or shorts
Preteen may enter:
Dress, jumper, skirt, pants, shorts,
vest, sweater, shirt/blouse, jacket or a combination of garments
To be eligible, a garment must have
been completed after January 1, 2010.
WHAT FABRICS/YARNS CAN I USE?
-
100% wool or wool blend (minimum
60% wool or specialty wool fiber) for each fashion fabric or yarn
used. Specialty wool fibers include: mohair, cashmere, alpaca, camel,
llama.

The entire garment body (back,
front and sleeves) must be wool or wool-blend fabrics.
-
Trims, facings, linings, interfacings
and underlinings may be fabrics other than wool or wool blends.

HOW CAN I BE CERTAIN MY FABRIC/YARNS
ARE WOOL?
Place a 1" fabric square in
1 cup NEW CLOROX bleach. 100% wool will begin to disintegrate within
1 hour and should have no residue after several hours. Wool blends will
have fibers remaining. Note: Fabric finishes and other natural
fibers may affect the test results.

Send it to the testing laboratory
for a more accurate analysis. There is usually a charge for this service.
Ask your state director for more information.

Additional testing will be done
prior to the state and national contests.

Judging is private and the judges'
decisions are final.
HOW CAN I ENTER?

state where you live or attend school.

You may enter more than one
garment, using a separate form for each entry.

Past National Junior and Senior
winners may not compete again in the same age division.

Past National Adult photo/video
winners may not compete again for 3 years.

WHAT ARE THE PRIZES?

Junior and Senior state winners advance to the National
Competition.

Adult state winners send 5"x7" photos and
video (maximum 3 minutes) of themselves wearing garment(s) to national
photo competition. National Adult winner receives a trip to model
in the National Competition.

Fabrics, sewing books, equipment and notions are
awarded at State and National levels.
