Lamb Ambassador
Fact Sheet
Purpose: to develop
a cadre of lamb ambassadors who will promote Minnesota and American
lamb to urban customers. Individuals will gain communications skills
and learn the state of the art practices of the production of American
lamb. Ambassadors will be involved with Minnesota State Fair booths,
area sheep festivals and in-store retail demos.
Situation: Consumers
in the St. Paul - Minneapolis area lack consumer knowledge of nutritional
value, eating quality, food safety and food preparation as it relates
to lamb. Minnesota Lamb and Wool Producers have not had a core of
industry spokespeople to educate and promote American lamb products
to urban consumers. College and upper class high school students
are a source of ambassadors and have interest in the promotion of
the lamb industry and learn communications skills.
Expectation of lamb ambassadors:
Individuals will be provided an educational background in sheep
production practices, lamb product nutritional facts, lamb food
recipes, and lamb food preparation. These topics will be used in
the education of urban consumers so that they understand that lamb
is a good protein source in their daily diet. These topics will
be taught to ambassadors through on-farm and classroom training
sessions provided by area lamb producers, University of Minnesota
specialists, Minnesota Foundation for Responsible Animal Care, and
Dorsetdale Shepherd Farms Cooperative. The materials are presented
to ambassadors so that they have hands-on and state of the art information
concerning the lamb industry.
Compensation: Ambassadors
will be provided internships based on their interest, participation
and involvement in the project. The monetary value will be a minimum
of $500.00 plus expenses for mileage and other costs which relate
to the intern's promotional activities. These costs must be pre-approved
by the project director. The internship will be for a one year duration
which can be renewed by a reapplication process.
